Unfamiliar

2024 - ongoing

Newham, East London.

A borough shaped by migration, movement,

and displacement. Most who live here were born

elsewhere.

It’s a place that feels unfamiliar, both to outsiders

and to many who live here.

I started this project as an immigrant myself, coming

from Portugal. There, life is slow and shaped by sun

and tradition.

Newham felt like the opposite — functional,

modernist, and often harsh.

This project documents what is ordinary here.

Places built for use, not for beauty.

Through photography, I record what’s visible but

often unacknowledged — the textures of a place

that is still new to me.
